Across 21 editions from 1930 to 2022, the host won the opening match 17 times, drew 2, and lost 2 (most recently 2022). The frequency is high (about 81%), but the claim of 'always' is straightforwardly false.

Host wins, openers
From 1930 through 2010, no European nation had won an edition held in the Americas. Germany's 1–0 win over Argentina in the 2014 final at the Maracanã ended that streak.
France (2002), Italy (2010), Spain (2014), Germany (2018) and France (2022, until the final) were all hobbled by the burden of defending. The exceptions: Brazil (1962, retained) and Argentina (1990, lost final). The 'curse' framing oversells a real-but-not-universal pattern.
Studies of professional penalties (including in major-tournament data) find that strikes aimed at the goalkeeper's central zone convert at a higher rate than expected, because goalkeepers commit early to one side. The 'corners only' rule is folk wisdom — well-placed central strikes are statistically excellent.
